From Skin to Frame: Key Applications of Sheet Metal Fabrication in High-Speed Train Front Ends

The front end of a high-speed train is the part of the entire vehicle with the most complex aerodynamic shape and the highest structural strength requirements.

The front end of a high-speed train is the part of the entire vehicle with the most complex aerodynamic shape and the highest structural strength requirements; its manufacturing relies heavily on sheet metal fabrication. Unlike conventional trains, high-speed trains have strict requirements for body weight, so the manufacture of train front ends has shifted from traditional carbon steel materials to lightweight materials such as corrosion-resistant aluminum.

In the production of high-speed train heads, sheet metal fabrication plays a fundamental role. Core structures such as the head’s skin (exterior panels), skeleton, and driver’s cab are all produced through sheet metal fabrication processes. This encompasses the entire process from cutting and blanking to bending and forming, utilizing equipment such as large-scale laser cutters, waterjet cutters, CNC shears, and CNC press brakes. To meet the forming requirements of the complex curved surfaces of the train heads, advanced forming technologies—such as “die-less multi-point forming of sheet metal” and “rapid superplastic forming”—have been applied to the production of streamlined train head panels and aluminum alloy skins. For example, in the development of new high-speed trains, the superplastic forming process was successfully used for key aluminum alloy components, such as the left and right side walls of the train head, effectively reducing the number of parts and lowering the overall weight of the train.

In addition, the assembly of high-speed train heads involves the joining and welding of a large number of metal components. The general process for car body production involves first cutting aluminum alloy raw materials to size, then machining and welding them into different components, and finally assembling and welding them into a complete car body.
